What are Minority Grants and how can I get one?
74What are minority grants and where to find them?
Minority grants are awarded to people who are in minority population in United States of America. Every year, millions of dollars are set aside by the government for these types of grants. Minority groups include Native North Americans, Hispanics, and Asians, American Indian, African North Americans or any other ethnic group in minority population.
The first place to look for a minority grant is the federal grant. The federal grant for minorities can be used for education or business purposes. For ethnic minority student federal grants are the best option. The main source of any free minority grant is through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid commonly known as the FAFSA.
Apart from the government, there are various well known private and non-profit organizations that also provide grants for minorities. A few of these organizations are United Negro College Fund, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Hispanic College Fund and the American Indian College Fund.
What types of minority grants are available?
Government grants for minority are available for various purposes.
1. First and foremost in this list comes the education. As per the 'No child left behind act', each eligible child has the right to get education. For minorities, the child is not only eligible to apply under FAFSA as mentioned above; he is also eligible for specific minority grant as well. And since, this is a grant and not a loan there is any need to pay back the money.
2. Apart from education, there are minority grants for housing as well. If there are any low income citizens in minority community, they are eligible for purchasing a house at a subsidized price.
3. There are minority grants for small business as well.
4. There are grants for minorities if they become bankrupt due to any reason. This grant will help them restart their financial life.
5. Minority grants are also available for single parents. If the single parent is working, there are grants available to cover the day care costs.
6. There is also a grant available for disadvantaged families. If the children from these families excel in studies, they may get grants to go for higher studies on government's expense.
