Ultrasonic liposuction or ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL)

By

Ultrasonic liposuction or Ultrasonic assisted liposuction is a type of liposuction in which high pitched sound waves are used to liquefy the fat inside the body part before it is sucked out. Ultrasonic assisted liposuction is used in areas where the fat is hard to treat using normal liposuction techniques. These areas include chin, neck, cheeks, ankles and knees.
Most of the time, ultrasonic liposuction is used in conjunction with tumescent liposuction.

The first internal ultrasonic liposuction patents were issued around 1987. There are two types of ultrasonic liposuction - internal ultrasonic liposuction and external ultrasonic liposuction. In internal method, a cannula is used inside the body to produce the ultrasonic waves and in external methods; an external vibrating machine is used to do produce the same effect.

Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction Procedure
UAL is a method of liposuction in which ultrasonic rays or high pitched is used to melt the fat before it is sucked out. And when a tumescent fluid is injected in the part inside the body, the liquid fat emulsifies. This makes the suction or fat removal easier. First the body is injected with tumescent fluids. These fluids are mixture of water saline solution, local anesthetic and epinephrine. This helps prevent fluid loss during the fat removal process and makes the deposits easier to remove. Then the ultrasonic waves are initiated for fat removal process. The high pitched waves are transmitted to a cannula (which is a thin, vacuum-like tube). When the cannula comes into contact with the fat cells, they quickly liquefy, and are easily vacuumed out.

Advantages of Ultrasonic Liposuction
The main advantage of ultrasonic liposuction is that it can be used on body parts where fat deposits are denser and not very easy to remove using normal procedures. Apart from liposuction advantages, this method has an added advantage of tightening the skin. There is a great way to avoid procedures like tummy tuck or body lifts which are very costly procedures. Another advantage of this procedure is that it is used in combination with tumescent liposuction therefore it is a good way to do body tuning.

Risks of Ultrasonic Liposuction

The risks in ultrasonic liposuction include:

  • UAL causes blood clots in the small blood vessels. Internal UAL produces heat and elevates the temperature of targeted fatty tissue. When temperature rises, there is a danger of blood clotting thereby resulting in dead skin.
  • Injury to peripheral nerves is possible with UAL. Patients who have had internal UAL appear to have an increased incidence of prolonged numbness consistent with injury to sensory nerves.
  • Ultrasonic liposuction can cause sermoas. A seroma is a fluid-filled cavity beneath the skin containing serum (clear yellow fluid) that can persistent for weeks or months. Internal UAL causes the formation of seromas in 15% to 70% of patients.
  • The external UAL device is the same ultrasound apparatus which has been traditionally being used by physical therapists. These machines are associated with definite risks and dangers.

To make sure that there are not unnecessary side effects and other risks, it is imperative that the patients go to an experienced and reputed surgeon. Since ultrasonic liposuction costs are pretty high, some people make the mistake of going to a doctor who is willing to do a cheap liposuction surgery. This could be a very high risk to their health which should be avoided at any cost. Always do the research on internet to find a suitable doctor near your locality before finalizing the surgeon for ultrasonic liposuction.
